This session the Learning 2 Learn will continue to be delivered to S2 pupils by Miss Gardener.  The staff from the Modern Languages department are also now involved and have taken on one class each.  Miss McPherson has returned to teaching a full  Music timetable and will therefore not be taking any Learning 2 Learn classes this year.

We have now added a page to this website with some examples of pupil work on it.  The pupils were asked to research someone who they considered to be successful and to create a short powerpoint presentation on that person.  They were challenged to link their chosen person’s success to the 5 R’s.  It was very interesting to see some of the people that the pupils chose.

Last term pupils began working on one of the most important areas of the course – the 5 R’s (please visit the page on this site for more details).  The 5 R’s are Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reflection, Reasoning and Responsibility.  These are promoted in the L2L course as being the core skills which pupils should develop in order to become more successful learners.

Pupils have been working with the 5 R’s Superhero top trumps cards, which are a fantastic resource.  Eventually they will create a learner superhero card to represent themselves.  This is a creative way to develop their understanding of their own skills and qualities, and where they are at the moment in terms of the 5 R’s.

Pupils are currently looking at the qualities of successful people who they admire and working on ways in which they can enhance these qualities in themselves in order to become successful in life.  We are hoping that these activities will help them to positively focus on achieving success and the key learning skills they need to work on developing.  We are planning on following up this work during the S3 Induction day which will take place later this year.

The pupils are currently in the process of creating individual learner profiles.  They have been looking at various areas including their preferred learning environment, who they learn best with, what motivates them to learn, how they learn best and which learning methods suit them.  Pupils have been using learning flashcards to find out more about themselves as learners.  They will then be using this information to create some personal targets to try to  improve their learning in school.

This term the pupils are beginning to look at memory skills.  In the KAS target sheets, many of the pupils identified memory as one of the skills they felt they needed to develop to become more effective learners.  They will be learning some techniques to improve their memory using the SPECS framework (See it, Personalise it, Exaggerate it, Connect it, Share it).

Pupils will then go on to look more specifically at the best ways for them to learn more effectively.  This will include looking at where they learn best, who they learn best with, when they learn best and how they learn best.
